If I was to list the things that happen in this film, you wouldn’t want to watch it. While watching along with The Last Drive In, I realised that I could not even begin to give this a serious review.
In terms of 70s exploitation cinema, it’s pretty graphic. The feel of the film evokes feelings of the video nasties and snuff, both are which are unpleasant feelings to have. This is quite strange, as I had a good time watching this one. Definitely one of those films I’d put on a film party with my mates so everyone can scream and laugh at the tv while we drink some beers.
The effects don’t particularly hold up, the blood looks more like ketchup than anything else. The mere context of most of the situations that you find yourself involved in is enough to make you squirm. To name a few – human dart board (with rectal bullseye), eyeball chewing and frying, teeth pulling, a severed head gives head and a midget spanks an unfortunate lady with a guillotine hanging over her head. to be honest, a lot of these situations are hilarious just because of the sheer audacity of the director to even attempt to get this into theatres. But that’s where the charm lies.
Blood Sucking Freaks is a cult classic, with hammy acting and some real corny characters on screen, if you go into this film expecting Saw, think again.
