I watched [REC] when I was enduring a horror film marathon all nighter with my friends in school one Halloween Night. With our snacks and comfy chairs, we watched several films, V/H/S was on of them, and I vividly remember watching the original of Quarantine. I remember choosing it mostly due to it being one of the scariest films around, so it was perfect for the night. The film was quite standard really, a zombie film with a found-footage format. Until the end… we were all screaming and shouting “What the fuck is that what in the hell oh my god what the shit” – Those who have seen it will know.
Quarantine is actually a decent remake, and I enjoy Jennifer Carpenter in the role and I think she does a realistic portrayal of someone in this situation. The ending is not as powerful as it was in its predecessor, but pretty decent nonetheless.
It’s not terrible, but it doesn’t improve on the original or provide anything different, and essentially treads the same path, which is fine, it just hits the same beats for people who have seen [REC]. As far as remakes go, it’s not bad, but it’s not great either. Although I will say the aspects of the government keeping them inside the apartment block was terrifyingly reminiscent of the 2020 pandemic.
Controversial opinion: I prefer The Hills have Eyes remake over the original.
