‘The Blackcoat’s Daughter’ is a moody supernatural thriller starring Kiernan Shipka (from Sabrina fame) stuck at a prestigious prep school with Rose while they wait for their parents to come and pick them up. While they wait, strange events start to happen.
I don’t want to spoil the plot as I feel that the revelation at the end may put people off, although of what it is, it is effective. The standout for me is hands-down Shipka, her disturbing glances into the corner of the room and her sly smirks are devilishly mischievous and she does create a sense of fear.
The plot at first is tough to get into, I struggled to understand who was who for a while, but I feel like that is the point of the film, so try not to be put off by that.
This is A24, which brings with it a meaning all by itself. It is a slow burner, and does end relatively ambiguously, so if you’re looking for a jumpscare filled Blumhouse night, then maybe look elsewhere. If you’re looking for a slow, deliberate and vague tale of the deepest of evils, then look no further.
